Behind the Songs: Diving Into the Myth With Flasher

Emma Baker and Taylor Mulitz, the dynamic duo behind the electrifying band Flasher, only recently released their new EP In My Myth.
The four-song collection was produced by Owen Wuerker and mixed by Jorge Elbrecht (Sky Ferreira, Japanese Breakfast) and follows the band’s 2022 sophomore LP Love Is Yours.
The new release coincides with Flasher’s UK tour this month, which includes a date at Colours Hoxton, London, on May 18.
“In My Myth is a collection of songs written in between tours and between coasts,” reads their statement.
“These songs are about reckoning with our own self-mythologising, the sinister side of ‘wellness’, watching relationships shift over time, and not being done yet.”
Here, the two share more about the stories behind each one – candidly, and certainly without holding anything back.
‘EASTERN AVE’
“Eastern Ave” is a love song to your hometown and those that matter to you most. It’s a nostalgic dive back to those seemingly mundane moments that become markers of falling in love – or finding your people.
All three of us (Taylor, Emma and Owen) attempted guitar solos on this song and the final version is a mash up of the best parts from each.
'ADRIENE’
“Adriene” is a song about the paradox of being sold a holistic or spiritually enlightened life in a capitalist system. It’s about the fine line between “clearing your mind” and avoiding an uncomfortable reality.
The instrumental second half of the song is meditative, an attempt to self soothe after the invasive thoughts presented in the chorus.
‘MOTIVE’
“Motive” was written after an unintended experience Taylor had at a Serpentwithfeet show. The lyrics are about the things that came into perspective during that experience. The title for the EP is taken from the lyrics of this song.
‘HANDS ON’
“Hands On” is about burn out and the unwavering desire to quit.
An early iteration of this song had a vocal melody that reminded Emma of the band Hanson, so naturally the working title became “Hanson”.
Because we are creative geniuses that become really attached to the dumb names we give our demos, its final title had to remain close, so we landed on “Hands On”.
