Sound Makers | Brigitte Hart Hears the Stories of the River Thames

What story lies beneath a sound? We naturally tend to identify objects visually. We look at them, and our brain fills us with information based on the knowledge and memories we store, giving us a frame of reference to fully understand what’s in front of us.
Similarly, objects also feature sound properties that can be used to catalogue them. Not only that, but these sounds can evoke emotions, stimulate our imagination, and bring us back to a time when these artefacts had a different role in our society or our lives.
Studying the acoustic properties of objects is the lifetime project of Brigitte Hart, a London-based, Australian-born sound artist whose works explore the relationship between ecosystems, soundscapes and society.
By analysing the sonic textures of found objects, Hart listens intently to their story and ultimately gives them new life. In her studio, she enhances these sounds and audio frequencies, filling the void between the object and memory with otherworldly yet nostalgic sounds.
Currently, Brigitte Hart is working on a project focused on the sounds of the Thames, a river that has defined the history of London since its inception and carries objects that speak of bygone times.
Watch the video to follow as she explores the Thames’ banks and collects objects from our pasts, creating a historical record through audio: an emotional soundscape that can help listeners connect with their environment through long-forgotten sonic memories.
Part of Sound Makers, a series shining the spotlight on unique personalities shaping our everyday soundscapes: how they began their journey of creating sounds, what inspires and drives them, and the process behind bringing their magic to life.
